Self – Transformation (ST) is a journey from where we
are to where we want to be; it is a development from what we are to where we
want to be.
To understand this, let’s read a story from
Ramakrishna Literature how a robber becomes a saint.
One day, a robber broke into a rich nobleman’s house
by making a hole into a wall. As he was about to enter the house, he overheard
the conversation between the master of the house and his wife. The man was
saying that he would give his daughter in marriage to a saint. The wife
protested, saying that the daughter
would suffer, having to eat stale food that the saint got from begging. The
husband replied that he would give gold, home and all his lands as dowry so
that his daughter would be prosperous and have a husband of great character.
The wife was satisfied and kept quiet. The thief, on hearing this, immediately
abandoned his original intentions of robbing the house and hatched a plot. He
went to a small stone structure on the banks of the river near the town and
donning a saint’s saffron clothes sat in pretended penance. The father, who saw
him, decided to give his daughter to this saint, provided he proved to be truly
a saint. He called his assistants and ordered them to follow him day and night
for a year and report if he was a genuine saint. The thief came to know about
this and decided to put up an indubitable act by strictly living the life of a
saint for the span of one year. He prayed, meditated, visited temples, and gave
discourses in right earnest. He followed the routine so meticulously that the
servants of the father could not find a single fault in the life of the
‘saint’. At the end of year, they reported to their master that he was a true
saint.
The next morning, the nobleman along with his retinue
went to the thief with flowers, fruit, and costly dresses, bowed to the fake
saint, and requested him to marry his daughter and accept all his wealth worth
crores(millions) of rupees. The thief smiled at the nobleman and said ‘What
should I do with your wealth, and why would I want your daughter in marriage? I
have the wealth of the Lord God above and of the whole world’. He declined the
nobleman’s offer and blessed both father and daughter and left the town with
his followers.

The above story tells about the process of
transformation of a robber to a saint. Although the robber was pretending of
living the life of a saint by praying, meditating, chanting and giving
discourses etc; but got completely transformed – his actions created the new
experiences which changed his thinking and behavior and he refused the wealth
and the girl in marriage.
Our past cumulative experiences have created us the
way we are right now – our behavior,
habits, attitudes, perceptions, beliefs, values and traits etc. These past
experiences comprise of our daily activities (actions), thinking, feelings,
responses to problems or situations and all the inputs from our senses. Neuro
Science says that these cumulative experiences are stored as engrams in our
brain or nervous system as impressions or samaskaras. We can also term them as
programmes. These repeated impressions or programme- set controls our present
behavior, habits, attitudes, perceptions, beliefs, values and traits etc and
this determines what we are now. If we want to change from what we are to what
we want to become; we have to change our behavior appropriately. These changes
can be brought about by changing the current programme set as engrams. Engrams
can be changed only by new personally created experiences, as our own
experiences have formed them. The robber got totally transformed by his
thinking and actions. His thoughts and actions created a new experience which
brought about his transformation. The new personally created experience can be
either actual or synthetic (vividly imagined – pseudo) experience; as our nervous
system is unable to distinguish between the real experience and the vividly
imagined experience. As the actual experience is quite difficult to create;
while developing BMP (Body Mind
Programming) a programming approach to self transformation, we focused on
creating the ‘Synthetic Experience’ (vividly imagined –pseudo). In this goals
or outcome required are implanted consciously at subconscious mind for the
purpose of guiding body – mind system towards the new experiences and this
enabling the brain / nervous system to either form a new modified engrams or to erase the old
self defeating engrams.

In the computer, the programme processes the input
data and information in a particular way to obtain the desired outcome. If the
programme is changed the same data is processed in a different way and
different output is obtained. In the body mind programming we have developed
the systematic seven step methodology to bring about the desired change in
programmes thus influencing changes in the behavior. BMP uses
the mode of ‘Outcome Thinking’, which follows the goal seeking behavior of the
human brain as per psycho cybernetics. The desired synthetic experience is
created using especially developed ‘BMP Vehicles’ for bringing about the
desired changes in the programmes and thus the behavior. Therefore, we see
that programming approach for bringing about the desired changes in our
behavior is more efficient, appropriate and faster.
Professor K.N.Krishnaswamy and Raj Kumar Dham both from
the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore developed the new programming
approach for Self Transformation and named it BMP (Body Mind Programming). BMP
is a systematic seven – step. It is the
outcome of the coupling of ancient Indian and eastern wisdom with western
scientific thinking. The technique has been tested on a fairly large number of
people both from India and abroad.
We can say ‘Self Transformation’ is a journey from
what you are and where you are, to what you want to be and where you want to
be. It implies that one should have a goal or purpose in life, and to achieve
that goal one has to bring about appropriate changes in habits, attitudes,
beliefs and also has to acquire desired knowledge and skills. Thus, Self
Transformation can be defined as bringing about the desired changes in
behavior, knowledge and skills etc, to achieve or accomplish the goal or
purpose in life.
BMP is a new paradigm for Self Transformation and also
helps in finding creative solutions to our problems. The main advantage of
programming approach for self transformation is that it is much faster, quicker,
and effective. When one thing or attribute is changed in one programme it
changes that attribute in all other programmes automatically. Our ‘Inner
computer’ is intelligent and it is able to find out anything against or
contrary to this attributes and it modifies and changes those aspects
appropriately. This aspect makes it very powerful tool for self transformation
for the individuals and people working in HRD and other areas and looking for
change in the individual, group or organization.
